(Ita-Eng) I verdi mangiatutto / the green mangetout peas

"In 1950 with the sale of a mangetout peas harvest managed to buy myself a small car ..." With these words Mr. Malavolta (the father) expresses all his regret by telling me how much a harvest was worth in his time and how it's difficult now cultivate healthily to earn from the sale of crops.

When the country people work hard to defend a seed so important and now almost completely gone, they do like Enzo and his family "In 1900 in these lands the mangetout pea was the queen of the crops; my father, thanks to the sale of the mangetouts has managed to have the financial resources to build what is now our organic farm". Enzo tells me how much in the first half of the 20th century this crop was very important for local agriculture, because unlike almost all other vegetables you ate all the whole vegetables including the peel, which was the reason why it was convenient to both farmers and customers.

In the agricultural basin of Massignano village which goes downhill to the sea that bathes the Picene coast of the Marche region, this family works to conserve seeds of local crops that would otherwise disappear.

After the local varieties have been abandoned for decades, the Malavolta family have recovered them thanks to the organic farming that they have been following since 1955.

They work on the recovery of autochthonous crop varieties such as cherries, peaches, plums, apricots; they self-reproducing their ancient seeds such as the Saragolla and Senatore Cappelli wheat, the 8-row Rosso Natale maize special for polenta, the Massignano melon, the watermelon produced by the grandfather, leeks, pumpkins, tomatoes ... Enzo wants to explain better "we make All this thing to give back to crops, all important elements to normalize the values of our organism, which no other type of cultivation can give"

"We feel deeply guardians of our soil and the biodiversity of this generous territory; thanks to the self-production of seeds we recreate local crops that would otherwise disappear, thus promoting the recovery of the cultural and food traditions of our community"

This NOT! BLOG ® was born thanks to my professional background and the travels that my job entails (LINK) ; on the homepage you will find posts with images, videos and stories that I make while traveling in search of healthy lands and loyal producers, locating them on the HEALTHYSOILMAP® because I am firmly convinced that "the gesture of healthy and proximity shopping" can save us by making us avoid immaculate and perfect foods in commercials but that their production, storage and distribution do not contribute to the good of our health, to that of soil and therefore the environment. The "MADE TO SUSTAIN" page contains a list of unique pieces that I create with reclaimed wood, especially pallets, thanks to a playful "nonsense style"; I do it in a sustainable way by building and working them by hand, coloring them with flame or thanks to natural pigments extracted through alcohol or water from spices, fruit, vegetables and vegetable waste: the finish is done with linseed oil. If you book one, your welcome contribution will support the travel and labor costs required to give continuity to the independent and bottom-up rural project of this site.
